New Delhi: The Congress on Monday took a swipe at the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over claims that traders would suffer because of the INDIA bloc rally, saying the BJP's ‘jhansamantri’ propaganda had been ‘punctured’ as markets reportedly remained open across Delhi.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh shared on X a media report claiming that shops remained open across the national capital and that fears of political activities disrupting business had proved unfounded.

In a post in Hindi, Ramesh said the BJP’s attempt to discredit the INDIA bloc's rally and discourage people from travelling to Delhi by claiming that businesses would suffer had failed.

He said people arriving from across the country for the rally had also shopped in Delhi, benefiting local businesses.

Ramesh alleged that the BJP had launched a “false and irrational smear campaign” to divert attention from the issues of ‘vote theft’ and the Election Commission’s accountability, and to discourage people from attending the rally.

“Following an appeal by Rahul Gandhi, people shopped in Delhi’s markets. Shops in the wholesale markets of Old Delhi remained open, and businesses thrived. Furthermore, people made significant purchases from small shopkeepers and street vendors alike. Newspaper reports themselves expose the hollowness of this false narrative,” he said.

Ramesh thanked traders, shopkeepers and other residents for supporting both the democratic protest and the local economy, and said the BJP should understand that “the voice of democracy cannot be suppressed by fear or propaganda”.

“The BJP and its ‘jhansamantri’ should understand that the people of the country have been witnessing these tactics for the past 12 years and will no longer fall for their tricks,” he said.

“The public will safeguard their right to vote, keep businesses running, and demand accountability. Vote chor, gaddi chhod!” Ramesh added.

On Saturday night, Rahul Gandhi had urged people travelling to the national capital for the INDIA bloc’s march and rally to shop ahead of Diwali and support local traders. He had asserted that the Opposition’s programme would not hurt businesses despite the BJP allegedly spreading rumours.

The INDIA bloc on Sunday called for the BJP’s ouster from power over allegations of ‘vote chori’. Gandhi asserted that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar would be removed and sent to jail for ‘treason’ in the future, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah would not be allowed to escape the law.
